Dengue Combo Test – NS-1/lgG/lgM

Globally, WHO has estimated that around 3 billion people reside in areas where there are risks of exposure to dengue virus and nearly 50 million people are infected with dengue virus every year. Caused by the Dengue virus, Dengue fever is spread by mosquitoes. Dengue virus is a RNA virus, consisting of four serotypes (1, 2, 3 and 4) all of which cause infection. 

Better diagnosis and treatment will prevent patients from going through this ordeal. The early diagnosis of dengue is also required for identifying an epidemic and also for implementing effective vector control measures.

How it works

The Dengue Combo Test checks for a combination of antibodies and antigens. Firstly, NS1 (non-structural protein 1) antigen–a highly conserved glycoprotein for all the serotypes– is detectable in blood from first day after the onset of fever up to day 9. NS1 antigen offers earlier detection of the infection compared to the conventional serological methods that are currently used.

Secondly, the two different classes of antibodies produced by the body in response to a dengue fever infection, IgG and IgM. Accurate diagnosis may require a combination of these tests because the body's immune system produces varying levels of antibodies over the course of the illness.

Works in Low-resource settings

Cases with a primary or secondary dengue virus infection in the initial febrile phase of illness will not escape detection with the use of this combination test. Utilisation of this combination is crucial in the diagnosis of dengue virus infection in health care centres lacking sophisticated laboratory facilities as it means that one laboratory session would rule out dengue virus infection and also identify cases with severe thrombocytopenia who might have otherwise escaped detection.

How it works

Malaria Antigen Detection Test assists in the diagnosis of malaria by providing evidence of the presence of malaria parasites in human blood. The test detects specific antigens (proteins) produced by malaria parasites in the blood of infected individuals.
